♦ Description : “Michael, his doll, his boat, doggie and the baby love more than anything to snuggle against mom, under the cover of moose, and forward, backward, forward, back … they sway.
On the lap of mom tells the story of a boy from the far north, Michael. This one enjoys a moment of hug with his mother: in front, back, they sway. The little boy adds pleasure to this moment by fetching his doll, his boat, his blanket and even his dog. There are people on the lap of mom and it’s always nice to swing against each other!
Then the little brother starts crying so that mom will pick him up. But Michael does not agree: “There is no room,” he said to his mother! Still, the baby and her big brother both stay on mom’s lap for a warm hug. The mother tightly closes her children and the book concludes as follows: “There is always room on the mother’s lap”.
The story is very beautiful, both in substance and in form. The repetition of sentences is reminiscent of the chorus of a lullaby and the images help to create a simple and touching atmosphere, we would almost want to join this family under the blanket sweet and warm.
This sweet album delicately addresses the emotions that children face when confronted by a little brother or sister who takes over parents’ time. The elder’s jealousy is portrayed unadorned and children can easily identify with it. The story is benevolent from start to finish, the facial expressions of the mother tell a lot about the love she has for her children.”
“Ann Herbert Scott is a distinguished author of books for young children. An award-winning author, his work has been published in Spanish, French and Eskimo, of course, as in English. Scott was born in Philadelphia on November 19, 1926, the only child loved by newspaper publisher Henry Laux Herbert and singer and artist Gladys Howe Herbert. She grew up in a close family with two great aunts and a great-uncle sharing an old farm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
From the beginning, she was interested in writing, social concerns and the life of the Spirit. These interests have remained with her through the years and continue to be central to her now that she is in her eighties.”
