♦ Description : “Maybe if we asked Alex Portnoy the following question: “If you had to draw a line on a part of your anatomy, which one would you choose?”, He would answer: “My genitals, my schlong in Yiddish”. .. just before you change your mind. Yet, sexuality is the problem of Alex … Brilliant pupil and senior manager in sight, overwhelmed by the authority of his parents so disproportionately attached to the American Jewish tradition, Alex is nonetheless an obsessed . And the terrible fantasies that haunt him will prove to be the heaviest burden that a man raised in the Jewish neighborhood of Newark has to bear …
With this devastating humor that hesitates to choose his side, tenderness or cynicism, Philip Roth attacks ignorance and the stupidity that feeds prejudice. He does so without any restraint or pity to raise as a standard the testimony of Portnoy, a desperate cry for tolerance. With this dive into sexuality, Philip Roth offers a shine literary and a passport to fame … – Hector Chavez”

Publisher’s presentation

“Day and night, at work and in the street – at thirty-three years of age, and he always roams the streets, with his eyes out of his head. A real miracle that it was not reduced to a taxi cabbage because of the way it crosses the major thoroughfares of Manhattan at lunchtime. Thirty-three years old, and always to watch and get the nag on every girl who crosses his legs in front of him in the subway.”

Author Biography

Biography

“Philip Roth”

Philip Roth – After a childhood spent in Newark, a port city near Manhattan, from which writer Nick Tosches was also born, Philip Roth studied at the university. His marriage, which turns to disaster, is at the origin of the themes of his first novels that will raise controversy, because of their raw and provocative character as ‘Portnoy and his complex’. Despite the scandal, Roth is quickly considered an influential writer. The writer then engages in what he himself defines as a struggle with ‘women, rabbis, politicians, psychoanalysts and literary critics’. Roth’s work, though essentially autobiographical, mixes genres and moves freely from fiction to confession in a jubilant style.”

Description : It is 1998, the year in which America is whipped into a frenzy of prurience by the impeachment of a president, and in a small New England town, an aging classics professor, Coleman Silk, is forced to retire when his colleagues decree that he is a racist. The charge is a lie, but the real truth about Silk would have astonished his most virulent accuser. Coleman Silk has a secret. But it's not the secret of his affair, at seventy-one, with Faunia Farley, a woman half his age with a savagely wrecked past--a part-time farmhand and a janitor at the college where, until recently, he was the powerful dean of faculty. And it's not the secret of Coleman's alleged racism, which provoked the college witch-hunt that cost him his job and, to his mind, killed his wife. Nor is it the secret of misogyny, despite the best efforts of his ambitious young colleague, Professor Delphine Roux, to expose him as a fiend. Coleman's secret has been kept for fifty years: from his wife, his four children, his colleagues, and his friends, including the writer Nathan Zuckerman, who sets out to understand how this eminent, upright man, esteemed as an educator for nearly all his life, had fabricated his identity and how that cannily controlled life came unraveled. Set in 1990s America, where conflicting moralities and ideological divisions are made manifest through public denunciation and rituals of purification, The Human Stain concludes Philip Roth's eloquent trilogy of postwar American lives that are as tragically determined by the nation's fate as by the "human stain" that so ineradicably marks human nature. This harrowing, deeply compassionate, and completely absorbing novel is a magnificent successor to his Vietnam-era novel, American Pastoral, and his McCarthy-era novel, I Married a Communist. Description : American Pastoral is the story of a fortunate American's rise and fall—of a strong, confident master of social equilibrium overwhelmed by the forces of social disorder. Seymour "Swede" Levov—a legendary high school athlete, a devoted family man, a hard worker, the prosperous inheritor of his father's Newark glove factory—comes of age in thriving, triumphant postwar America. But everything he loves is lost when the country begins to run amok in the turbulent 1960s. Not even the most private, well-intentioned citizen, it seems, gets to sidestep the sweep of history. With vigorous realism, Roth takes us back to the conflicts and violent transitions of the 1960s. This is a book about loving—and hating—America. It's a book about wanting to belong—and refusing to belong—to America. It sets the desire for an American pastoral—a respectable life of space, calm, order, optimism, and achievement—against the indigenous American Berserk. Description : Fifty years after the event, here is the first full account of an audacious publishing decision that -- with the help of booksellers and readers around the country -- forced the end of literary censorship in Australia. For more than seventy years, a succession of politicians, judges, and government officials in Australia worked in the shadows to enforce one of the most pervasive and conservative regimes of censorship in the world. The goal was simple: to keep Australia free of the moral contamination of impure literature. Under the censorship regime, books that might damage the morals of the Australian public were banned, seized, and burned; bookstores were raided; publishers were fined; and writers were charged and even jailed. But in the 1970s, that all changed. In 1970, in great secrecy and at considerable risk, Penguin Books Australia resolved to publish Portnoy's Complaint-- Philip Roth's frank, funny, and profane bestseller about a boy hung up about his mother and his penis. In doing so, Penguin spurred a direct confrontation with the censorship authorities, which culminated in criminal charges, police raids, and an unprecedented series of court trials across the country. Sweeping from the cabinet room to the courtroom, The Trials of Portnoydraws on archival records and new interviews to show how Penguin and a band of writers, booksellers, academics, and lawyers determinedly sought for Australians the freedom to read what they wished -- and how, in defeating the forces arrayed before them, they reshaped Australian literature and culture forever.
