♦ Description : “Before I went to the nursery, but now, I’m tall, I even have a mistress with very long princess hair, I’m going to school, to ma-ter-nelle school.” A funny and reassuring album to share with children their first steps in school. Serge Bloch tells the little ones one of the first great adventures of their life: entrance to school. The little reader discovers or finds the small and big events that punctuate the day in kindergarten: games, nap, canteen, recreation where you can run and especially CRIER FORT … And friends, adults who train the staff, the rules to respect … All this on a lively and removed, full of humor, in the text as in the drawings. Ideal for laughing together that sometimes angst, and smoothly cross a fundamental step. From 3 years.”

Description : A Meeting of the Minds: European and Tamil Encounters in Modern Sciences, 1507-1857 uncovers new aspects of the contributions of the Portuguese, Dutch, Dane, English and French East India Company officials and European missionaries to intellectual history in the fields of botany, chemistry, medicine, earth and space science within the specific geographical-historical locality of the Tamil coast in the early Modern Age. It discusses the relationships forged to underpin the progress in scientific knowledge and scholarship besides examining the varied manifestations of ideas, practices and forms of intellectual life developed and shared through association with the learned elite. The author argues that knowledge making processes then were not simple binaries such as dialogue or exchange, native or Western, collaboration or resistance, as found in the existing historiography, but were much more complex epistemological processes involving a deep understanding of construction and reconstruction at multiple nodes for production of knowledge, movement and reception. Description : Originally published in 1892, "the object of this Handbook is to supply readers and speakers with a lucid, but very brief account of such names as are used in allusions and references, whether by poets or prose writers; - to furnish those who consult it with the plot of popular dramas, the story of epic poems, and the outline of well-known tales. The number of dramatic plots sketched out is many hundreds. Another striking and interesting feature of the book is the revelation of the source from which dramatists and romancers have derived their stories, and the strange repetitions of historic incidents. It has been borne in mind throughout that it is not enough to state a fact. It must be stated attractively, and the character described must be drawn characteristically if the reader is to appreciate it, and feel an interest in what he reads." This work, an American reprint of The Reader's Handbook by E. Cobham Brewer, ..".while retaining all of the original material that can interest and aid the English-speaking student, gives also 'characters and sketches found in American novels, poetry and drama.'" Description : Use and Abuse of History has become a key text of current historiography; this is a book that poses fundamental and disturbing questions about the use and abuse of history. Engaging and challenging, this book confronts the reader with the many 'histories' that exist and have existed around the world, from the Zulu kingdoms to Communist China. This title has now been extensively revised by Marc Ferro, a well respected historian, and presents the different narratives that constitute the histories of countries as diverse as India, Iran, Trinidad and the United States makes for fascinating reading in their own right. What makes this book so valuable, though, is what these narratives tell us about the societies which create them – how much is history distorted in order to condition the minds of those who are taught it? Use and Abuse of History appeals to anyone with a general interested in history. Description : William O. Thweatt This book is the second in three surveys of the literature in the history of economic thought in the Kluwer Recent Economic Thought series. The first book, covering the pre-classical literature, has already been published; a third, on the neo-c1assical period, is planned for 1988. This middle book surveys the writings on classical political economy for the past 30 years, or roughly since the publication of Joseph Schumpeter's 1954 monumental History of Economic Analysis. Shortly after World War II, the American Economic Association spon sored a Survey of Contemporary Economics [1949]. That work covered 13 subdisciples of economics, and in 1952 a companion piece appeared in which surveys of 10 additional subdisciples were presented. As Bernard Haley, editor of the second volume, stated, even "though in the two volumes twenty-three fields have been treated ... there remain some aspects of the subject ... that have not been reviewed" [Haley, 1952, p. v].
