♦ Description : “Marco left Velizy for the campaign. He left his shrink because he thinks he’s better. He left his job as reporter because he is tired of photographing “exotic corpses or people in the process of becoming”. Apart from that, everything’s fine. He has an accomplice brother (laughs and big firecrackers) who calls him Georges and vice versa, because of John Malkovich who said in Mice and Men: “I’ll have a little rabbit and I’ll call him Georges, and I’ll will keep against my heart. “He has parents by the sea. A shriveled dad who forgets the present but remembers the color of his mother’s dress on the day of her wedding. A mother who is worried about him, his constipation, his future and the lung cancer that he will surely steal, like Mrs. Bergerin’s son. After an affectionate (and trying) time with the parents, he finds the silence of his little house in the greenery, and his cat (baptized Adolf because of a “assertive” character), which is charcutered by the big dog. a dirty hunter’s con. On this occasion, he meets Émilie, a veterinarian of his condition, and a nice little old man who picks blackberries. It makes him a love and a friend. But now everything is ripping away: Emilie starts to want scary things (share with him a house and a baby), and the disgusting past of the nice little old man emerges brutally. Marco cracks. And then, cruelty and bullshit ending destroying his world, he touches the bottom. Which allows him to go back up. “I still have a lot of things to clear up if I do not want to be reincarnated as a manhole,” he said, referring to his delicate relationship with women. He will avoid the manhole: he will do just what it takes to find Emily. “It’s the story of a tired photographer, a patient girl, banal horrors and a painful cat,” Larcenet writes. It is also a perfectly mastered scenario, funny – this accomplice joke that avoids irony – and tender, in total osmosis with a design hypersensitive to happiness and distress. (Not to mention the cat or Emilie, every couch is crisp.) Ordinary combat, the light and overwhelming story of a rebirth, is Larcenet’s most personal album, and the best – waiting for the next one.”

Biography

“Manu Larcenet”

Authors biography
“Manu Larcenet was born in 1969. Around the age of ten, he started to work on comics: he does it every day and he will never stop. He integrates ‘Fluid icy’ in 1994, and everyone pulls out – ‘Spirou’, Dupuis, Glénat … In 2000, he moved to “Poisson Pilote” (Dargaud) with Trondheim and “The cosmonauts of future “(2000-2004), then with his brother Patrice Larcenet and” Les Entremondes “(2000-2001), then alone with” Le Temps de chien “(2002),” Nic Oumouk “(2005-2007) and the magnificent “Combat Ordinary” (2003-2008), for which he obtains in 2004 the prize of the best album of the festival of Angoulême. In the meantime, in 2001, he moved to the Lyon region. This remarkable existential turn is worth to us “The return to the ground” (2002-2008, Dargaud), scripted in all complicity by his friend Jean-Yves Ferri. From 2008 to 2014, he launches into “Blast” (2009-2014, Dargaud): four dense albums, dark, tragic, drunk to the mouth of an overflowing humanity and a fascinating savagery. In 2010 and 2012, he published two twin books, the wonderful “Few people know” and “Many are ignorant” at Les Rêveurs, publishing house he co-founded in 1997 with his friend Nicolas Lebedel. In 2012, he illustrated Daniel Pennac’s novel “Diary of a Body”, (Futuropolis-Gallimard). In 2015, he tackled for the first time an adaptation, that of the “Brodeck Report” (Dargaud), the masterpiece of Philippe Claudel.”

Description : From a particularly humiliating accident at scout camp, to the final stages of terminal illness, Daniel Pennac's warm, witty and heart-breaking novel shows the rise and fall of an ordinary man, told through his observations of his own body. It is with damp eyes (not to mention underpants) that our narrator begins his diary, seeking through it to come to terms with the demoralising quirks of his fleshy confines. Through the joys and horrors of puberty to the triumphs of adolescence, we grow to love him through every growth, leak and wound, as he finds himself developing muscles, falling in love, and then leaving school to join the French Resistance. Yet, as ever, this is only half the story. As years pass and hairs grey, everything he took for granted begins to turn against him. Tackling taboo topics with honesty and charm, Pennac's wit remains sharp even as everything else begins to sag. This is a hugely original story of the most relatable of unlikely love stories: a human, and the body that defines him. When it comes to pop culture, Alfred Bester (1913-1987) is something of an unsung hero. He wrote radio scripts, screenplays, and comic books (in which capacity he created the original Green Lantern Oath). But Bester is best known for his science-fiction novels, and The Stars My Destination may be his finest creation. With its sly potshotting at corporate skullduggery, The Stars My Destination seems utterly contemporary, and has maintained its status as an underground classic for fifty years. Description : Whereas in English-speaking countries comics are for children or adults 'who should know better', in France and Belgium the form is recognized as the 'Ninth Art' and follows in the path of poetry, architecture, painting and cinema. The bande dessinée [comic strip] has its own national institutions, regularly obtains front-page coverage and has received the accolades of statesmen from De Gaulle onwards. On the way to providing a comprehensive introduction to the most francophone of cultural phenomena, this book considers national specificity as relevant to an anglophone reader, whilst exploring related issues such as text/image expression, historical precedents and sociological implication. To do so it presents and analyses priceless manuscripts, a Franco- American rodent, Nazi propaganda, a museum-piece urinal, intellectual gay porn and a prehistoric warrior who's really Zinedine Zidane.
