♦ Description : “While she loves since childhood the Duke of Guise, Marie de Mezieres is forced to marry another man. She becomes the princess of Montpensier and resigns herself to her fate. Until his eyes meet the duke’s again, reviving a flame she thought was extinct …

In the midst of wars of religion, Madame de Lafayette weaves the tragedy of a passionate love that runs up against the laws of society. Considered at its publication as “a little masterpiece”, La Princesse de Montpensier (1662), one of the first news of French literature, redefined the boundaries of the romantic genre. A work of insidious beauty, whose film adaptation of Bertrand Tavernier restores all the violence.

Biography

Madame de Lafayette”

“Madame de La Fayette was born Marie-Magdeleine Pioche of La Vergne on March 18, 1634 in Paris. His father, a gentleman passionate about literature, died in 1649 and his mother remarried then with the uncle of the Marquise de Sevigne. She will be the intimate friend of Marie-Magdeleine throughout her life. She did her literary and sentimental education with Ménage, who taught her Italian and Latin, and introduced her into the fashionable salons of Catherine de Rambouillet, the Marquise du Plessis-Bellière and Madeleine de Scudéry. Young, rich and cultivated, she becomes bridesmaid to Anne of Austria. At twenty-one, she married Count de La Fayette who retired to his estate in Auvergne, while she chose to live in Paris where her friendship with Henriette of England, future Duchess of Orleans, allows her to to penetrate the intimate circles of royalty. In 1665 she tied with La Rochefoucauld a relationship of friendship that lasted until the end of his life. In 1662 she published a new anonymous history, The Princess of Montpensier; in 1669 and 1671 are published, under the name of Segrais – one of his literate friends – the two volumes of Zaïde, which are a great success; in 1678 his masterpiece, The Princess of Cleves, aroused admiration. She succumbs to the disease on May 26, 1693. From 1720 will posthumously appear three books of her own: a History of Madame, Memoirs of the Court of France for 1688 and 1689, and a short story, The Countess of Tenda.

Madame de Lafayette, a little cousin of the Marquise de Sevigne, became lady-in-waiting to Queen Anne of Austria in 1650, and studied literature in the salons of Mademoiselle de Scudery. She frequented Jansenist circles and met François de La Rochefoucauld around 1660, with whom she became friends. In 1662, she published La Princesse de Montpensier and in 1670, Zaïde, in collaboration with La Rochefoucauld. In 1678 appeared his most famous novel, The Princess of Cleves. After the death of her husband and La Rochefoucauld, she wrote Memoirs of the Court of France for the years 1688 and 1689, which will be published only after her death.”

Description : An illustrated guide to the most adventurous journey there is: Life. Human beings have long been addicted to maps: they tell us where we are, how we got where we are, and where we are going next. But The Atlas of Experience is no ordinary book of maps. While adhering to the conventions of cartography, this atlas invites the traveler to follow routes through familiar-looking topography into hitherto uncharted realms of imagination, ideas, feelings and experience. Cradled by the Ocean of Possibilities, the Sea of Plenty and Still Waters, this strangely familiar place has its capital Boom, its airports Escape and Freedom. It encompasses beautiful regions like the Peninsular of Pleasure as well as desolate wastes such as the Swamps of Boredom and the Bay of Melancholy. Then again there are the well-known Mountains of Work and the Safe Harbour of Home. And what about the Volcanoes of Passion and the border towns of Challenge and Doubt? That's The Atlas of Experience the very special travel book that takes you on the long journey to where you are. Description : Born "Aleksey Maksimovich Peshkov" on March 16, 1868, in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia - later renamed in his honor - Maxim Gorky would learn early the harsh lessons of life. He spent his early childhood in Astrakhan where his father worked as a shipping agent, but when the boy was only five years old, his father died, and he was sent to live with his maternal grandparents. This was not a happy time for the young Gorky as conditions were poor and often violent. At the age of eight, the boy's grandfather forced him to quit school and apprenticed him to several tradesmen including a shoemaker and an icon painter. Fortunately, Gorky also worked as a dishwasher on a Volga steamer where a friendly cook taught him to read, and literature soon became his passion. Description : Marion De Lorme the heroine, and Didier the hero, are simple figures, and more like those to be found in the 'Hernani.' Didier is another brother of the Giaour, — mysterious, melancholic, misanthropic. Like Hernani, he is a wanderer on the face of the earth, and has great capacity for suffering. Marion De Lorme is a poetic portrait, no doubt highly flattered, of the fair and fragile beauty who has come down to us from history, leaving her character behind her. Although, as in all of Hugo's plays, the plot is of prime importance, we will say nothing of it here, because it is both hard and unfair to give in a scant sentence or two a sample of the situation for which the playwright has cunningly prepared by all that precedes it.
