Extract from the introduction
“I WILL HEAL THE WORLD OF THIS WOUND – THE CIGARETTE!”
I talked to my wife about it. She thought with reason that I was crazy because she had seen me make, practically every other year, serious efforts – but vain – to stop smoking. She was all the more right that my last attempt had left me crying with tears. I had failed again after six months of a real purgatory. I cried, because I thought that after this failure I would continue to smoke until death ensues. I had put so much energy into this last attempt that I thought myself unable to face such an ordeal again. My wife’s disbelief was all the more justified because I made that promise just after extinguishing my last cigarette. Not only was I healed, but I was going to heal the rest of the world!
In retrospect, it seems that my entire life prepared me to solve the problem of smoking. Even the painful years spent learning and practicing my accounting profession were invaluable in uncovering the mysteries of the smoking trap. It is said that it is impossible to deceive everyone eternally; I see that this is exactly what tobacco companies have been doing for years. I also believe I am the first to really understand the trap of smoking. If I seem arrogant to you, know that this revelation did not come from me, but from the circumstances of my life.
July 15, 1983 was D-Day. I did not escape Alcatraz, but I imagine that those who did it felt a relief comparable to the one I felt when I turned off my last cigarette. I realized that I had discovered what every smoker dreams about: an easy way to stop smoking. After experimenting with friends and family, I quickly became a full-time consultant, helping other smokers to break free.
I wrote the first edition of this book in 1985. It was inspired by one of my “chess”, the character described in chapter xxv. At each of the two visits he made me, we ended up in tears. He was so agitated that I could not get him to relax enough for him to understand the meaning of my words. I thought the only way he could receive my message was to write it. Thus, he could choose a better time to get started and read it, as many times as he wants.
I write this introduction on the occasion of the publication of the second edition. I look at the cover: a small inscription reminds that it has been a bestseller every year since its publication. I think of the thousands of letters from smokers around the world or their relatives who thank me for writing it. Unfortunately, I do not have the time to answer all of them, but each of them fills me with joy and only one of them would justify the trouble I took to write this book.
In 1983, Allen CARR designed The Simple Way to End the Cigarette, which will become a bestseller sold to more than 14 million copies worldwide. He is considered to be the # 1 smokers assistance expert and has adapted his method to many other areas.

THE DIGITAL EDITOR
“Allen Carr, an English national, has been smoking between 4 and 5 packets of cigarettes a day for 30 years. He had tried everything to stop … without success. He arrived one day very easily, without knowing the slightest lack. Shocked by this experience, he devised a method to help smokers get rid of this addiction. He is now considered one of the best specialists in stopping smoking. His method has been around the world and Allen Carr Centers are located in 18 countries. He died in 2006.
Allen Carr became a chartered accountant in 1958. If he thrived in his professional life, the daily consumption of a hundred cigarettes depressed him. In 1983, after the failure of countless attempts to stop smoking by the sole power of the will, he discovered a method that he shares in The Simple Method to End the Cigarette (Pocket, 2001), best-seller translated into more than forty languages and sold over 12 million copies worldwide. Therefore, no longer smoking, he devoted himself to other smokers. His solid reputation is based on the spectacular results of his method. He is now considered the number one expert in assisting smokers who want to quit smoking. At first, smokers from all over the world were in central London; today, its network of centers covers five continents. Several other books faithful to the principles that have made the success of his method have been translated into French and are available from Pocket Publishing, including The Simple Method for Losing Weight (2001), The Simple Method for Success (2007), La Simple method to control your alcohol consumption (2007) or the Simple method to free yourself from gambling addiction (2016).
Allen Carr has left a lasting legacy in the form of a vast and ever-dynamic editorial project. He also laid the foundation for a growing international network of centers to help smokers stop using his famous method.”
