♦ Description : “At the current pace of population growth, and particularly the increase in economic, health and energy needs, will contemporary societies survive tomorrow? The answer is based on a world tour in space and time – from the vanished societies of the past (the Easter, Pitcairn and Henderson Islands, the Mimbre and Anasazi Indians of the Southwest United States, the ugly and inca societies, the Vikings settlements of Greenland) to the fragile societies of today (Rwanda, Haiti and Santo Domingo, China, Montana and Australia) through the companies who knew, at a given moment, to stop their collapse (New Guinea, Tikopia and Japan of the Tokugawa era). From this comparative and unparalleled study, Jared Diamond concludes that there is no case in which the collapse of a society is attributable solely to ecological damage. Several factors, five in number, still potentially come into play: environmental damage; climate change; hostile neighbors; dependency relationships with trading partners; the answers given by a society, according to its own values, to these problems. This complexity of factors makes it possible to believe that there is nothing inevitable today in the accelerated race to the globalized degradation of the environment.”

Description : From the author of Guns, Germs and Steel, Jared Diamond's Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Survive is a visionary study of the mysterious downfall of past civilizations. Now in a revised edition with a new afterword, Jared Diamond's Collapse uncovers the secret behind why some societies flourish, while others founder - and what this means for our future. What happened to the people who made the forlorn long-abandoned statues of Easter Island? What happened to the architects of the crumbling Maya pyramids? Will we go the same way, our skyscrapers one day standing derelict and overgrown like the temples at Angkor Wat? Bringing together new evidence from a startling range of sources and piecing together the myriad influences, from climate to culture, that make societies self-destruct, Jared Diamond's Collapse also shows how - unlike our ancestors - we can benefit from our knowledge of the past and learn to be survivors. Description : This book illuminates the importance of threat on the representation of everyday life, from an interdisciplinary perspective. Divided into three parts, the book sets out by addressing the conceptual aspects of threat and by opening views on phenomena and social processes associated with threat. It shows how threat constitutes an analytical category that simultaneously involves social, psychological, religious, historical and political factors, and calls for a sufficiently broad conceptual definition to integrate pluri-disciplinary contributions. The second part focuses on the building of threats, mainly the environmental threats that have reached a tragic dimension today and are a core aspect of world concerns, the contemporary global terrorism, the migrations and the challenges these bring to contemporary societies, as well as the threats associated with the emergence of nationalism and the diverse aspects of excluding the Other. The final part examines the coping strategies, including oblivion, denial and defiance associated with different sources of threats, for instance those arising from epidemic and collective diseases, financial technology, natural disasters and collective traumas. Description : "Agency without Actors? New Approaches to collective Action is rethinking a key issue in social theory and research: the question of agency. The history of sociological thought is deeply intertwined with the discourse of human agency as an effect of social relations. In most recent discussions the role of non-humans gains a substantial impact. Consequently the book asks: Are nonhumans active, do they have agency? And if so: how and in what different ways? The volume offers a critical state-of-the-art debate of internationally and nationally leading scholars within Sociology, Social Anthropology and STS on agency (Latour, Law, Michael, Rammert etc.). It fosters the productive exchange of empirical settings and theoretical views by outlining a wide range of novel accounts that link human and non-human agency. It tries to understand social-technical, political and environmental networks as different forms of agency that produce discrete and identifiable entities like humans, animals, technical artifacts. It also asks how different types of (often conflicting) agency and agents actors are distinguished in practice, how they are maintained and how they interfere with each other"-- "Agency Without Actors?" written by Jan-Hendrik Passoth with ISBN_13 9781136851261 and ISBN_10 1136851267 with total page sheets [-240-].
