♦ Description : “Extract from the introduction – We both had dogs when we were kids. Although we were neither their true master, it was up to us to walk them.
The expectations of children are different from those of adults. First, they do not believe in the leash. And since we were both raised in the city, we had to teach our dogs to stay with us during the walks. We do not remember either the way we did it. Our dogs were probably smarter than us and it was for them to keep an eye on us rather than the other way around!
It was from 1968 that we approached dog training in a more structured way. We had a Newfoundland and we were encouraged to join the local dog training club. Very soon, this pleasant hobby became a hobby, then a true vocation and we started organizing seminars and five-day education camps that took us through almost every state in North America, Canada and England.
Thirty years have passed and we still share what we have learned. In their own way, our dogs were sometimes teachers rather than students, and we learned a lot from them.
It is difficult to become competent in a given field if you do not receive any help. We were lucky to be perfectly surrounded. A well-educated dog is the fruit of an education. You must know what makes a dog a dog, know his behavior, his reactions, his growth, his needs. Once you understand it, you will reach a relationship of mutual trust. A dog is not a consumer good, it’s an animal, and that’s what makes our work so exciting and challenging.
We hope this book is a useful tool for you. The education of your dog should not be a chore that must be done. It is structured so that you can pass indifferently from one chapter to another according to what concerns you. For example, if your dog is partly educated, but needs some small things, go directly to the chapters that interest you.
Throughout the book, we make reminders and overlaps so that you can have information in front of you without having to read it from one end to the other. Remember, your dog’s education should be fun, it’s not about passing a series of tests, unless you want your dog to enter the world of competition.
