Biography

“TORIYAMA Akira”

“We are very familiar with the Dragon Ball manga that has marked the history of Shenen manga, as well as the delirious Dr. Slump who has renewed the genre of humorous manga. Let’s take a closer look at their author, Akira Toriyama, her life and her memorable career.

His childhood – Akira Toriyama was born on April 5, 1955 in Aichi District, near Nagoya in central Honshu Island, Japan, of course. He spent his childhood, as much of his life, in the countryside, far from the city. He will tell us later, in small planks of a page, the games and the nonsense he made in the fields with his comrades, and many of his manga will take place in small villages, lined with meadows. and the sea as far as the eye can see …

He is passionate about drawing from an early age and is influenced by the productions of the time (Disney movies and the famous Tetsuwan Atomu – Astro Boy – Osamu Tezuka). In addition to some centers of interest such as film and TV, he will spend his school years and college to make drawings and read manga. He then goes into an artistic high school to follow a varied training, which allows him to draw even more in the last year, between two games of billiards and bowling …
The beginnings of active life

After his last year of high school, Toriyama decided not to continue his studies at university and to enter directly into active life, against the will of his parents. He started his first job at the age of 20, in an advertising design company. His work is effective, but his behavior is marginalized from other employees. Two and a half years later, he resigns. This job was however for him a first contact with the professional life.

We are in 1978 and Toriyama is looking for a job. That’s when he discovered a manga contest organized by Shueisha, the biggest publisher in Japan. To try to win the first prize, he participates in this contest by seriously making a small manga and sends it, but he won nothing. He tried his luck again, with very short stories never before, Awawa World and Mysterious Rain Jack, again in vain. However, he once received a call from Kazuhiko Torishima, an employee of the editorial team of the famous pre-publication magazine Weekly Shônen Jump, telling him not to give up and train more.”

Description : Creative practice in music, particularly in traditional concert culture, is commonly understood in terms of a rather stark division of labour between composer and performer. But this overlooks the distributed and interactive nature of the creative processes on which so much contemporary music depends. The incorporation of two features-improvisation and collaboration-into much contemporary music suggests that the received view of the relationship between composition and performance requires reassessment. Improvisation and collaborative working practices blur the composition/performance divide and, in doing so, provide important new perspectives on the forms of distributed creativity that play a central part in much contemporary music. Distributed Creativity: Collaboration and Improvisation in Contemporary Music explores the different ways in which collaboration and improvisation enable and constrain creative processes. Thirteen chapters and twelve shorter Interventions offer a range of perspectives on distributed creativity in music, on composer/performer collaborations and on contemporary improvisation practices. The chapters provide substantial discussions of a variety of conceptual frameworks and particular projects, while the Interventions present more informal contributions from a variety of practitioners (performers, composers, improvisers), giving insights into the pleasures and perils of working creatively in collaborative and improvised ways. Description : On July 1st 1997, China realized its long-standing ambition of resuming sovereignty over Hong Kong. Now the Communist Chinese leadership are dealing with their most public challenge: the enormous task of taking on a society which they both covet and fear, in the aftermath of the financial turmoil which overtook Asia in the fall of 1997. Hong Kong: China's New Colony tells the inside story of how the former British colony came under Chinese rule and how supposedly Communist China is coming to terms with presiding over what has been one of the world's most vibrant capitalist societies. It shows where real power lies in the new Hong Kong and describes in detail the wheeling and dealing which accompanied the establishment of the new order. Invaluable reading for anyone interested in the Far East, but especially for those who want to do business with the world's potentially biggest market, Hong Kong: China's New Colony answers all of these questions and more in a gripping and compulsively readable account of the future of this most unlikely of marriages. Stephen Vines is one of the best-known correspondents in Hong Kong, where he has lived for more than a decade. He is the Hong Kong correspondent for the Independent, founded a groundbreaking local paper, and broadcasts regularly for the BBC and other radio stations. He is the only Western journalist in Hong Kong to have successfully started a number of businesses with the Chinese, and certainly the only one to have had the Triads threaten him in his own shop.
