“We are very familiar with the Dragon Ball manga that has marked the history of Shenen manga, as well as the delirious Dr. Slump who has renewed the genre of humorous manga. Let’s take a closer look at their author, Akira Toriyama, her life and her memorable career.
His childhood – Akira Toriyama was born on April 5, 1955 in Aichi District, near Nagoya in central Honshu Island, Japan, of course. He spent his childhood, as much of his life, in the countryside, far from the city. He will tell us later, in small planks of a page, the games and the nonsense he made in the fields with his comrades, and many of his manga will take place in small villages, lined with meadows. and the sea as far as the eye can see …
He is passionate about drawing from an early age and is influenced by the productions of the time (Disney movies and the famous Tetsuwan Atomu – Astro Boy – Osamu Tezuka). In addition to some centers of interest such as film and TV, he will spend his school years and college to make drawings and read manga. He then goes into an artistic high school to follow a varied training, which allows him to draw even more in the last year, between two games of billiards and bowling …
The beginnings of active life
After his last year of high school, Toriyama decided not to continue his studies at university and to enter directly into active life, against the will of his parents. He started his first job at the age of 20, in an advertising design company. His work is effective, but his behavior is marginalized from other employees. Two and a half years later, he resigns. This job was however for him a first contact with the professional life.
We are in 1978 and Toriyama is looking for a job. That’s when he discovered a manga contest organized by Shueisha, the biggest publisher in Japan. To try to win the first prize, he participates in this contest by seriously making a small manga and sends it, but he won nothing. He tried his luck again, with very short stories never before, Awawa World and Mysterious Rain Jack, again in vain. However, he once received a call from Kazuhiko Torishima, an employee of the editorial team of the famous pre-publication magazine Weekly Shônen Jump, telling him not to give up and train more.”
