Best Practices – “AI and Bolognese Industrial Sauce”

Disruption is not just for tech start-ups: it’s universal and we have not seen anything yet about its power to transform our lives and societies. Everything is disruptable: companies, their products / services, customer experience, but also our organizational models, our ways of learning, to communicate, to work, our representations of the world, our values and even our own body. In this book, a broad spectrum of the impacts of this disruption is discussed: both technological advances (artificial intelligence, intelligent assistants, blockchain …), changes in organizational models (end of the wage system, hierarchies, company that produces in secret, new open-source and collaborative models …) and the changes of benchmarks (valorization of the experiment, signal theory and transparency as proof of quality / reputation for the individuals and the companies, end of the value of knowledge in favor of trust). Valuable leads are given to disrupt oneself instead of being disrupted (mentalities, methods and behaviors of entrepreneurs, techniques of Californian start-ups, recent discoveries in neuroscience …). Without language of wood, in a free and exciting tone, this committed book by a writer of the Y generation decodes the dynamics of disruption. By mixing descriptions, analyzes, illustrations and perspectives, he gives the keys to understand this world that is being born, not to fear it, and to engage in it, so that others do not build it for us.”

Description : In contemporary philosophy, substantive moral theories are typically classified as either consequentialist or deontological. Standard consequentialist theories insist, roughly, that agents must always act so as to produce the best available outcomes overall. Standard deontological theories, by contrast, maintain that there are some circumstances where one is permitted but not required to produce the best overall results, and still other circumstances in which one is positively forbidden to do so. Classical utilitarianism is the most familiar consequentialist view, but it is widely regarded as an inadequate account of morality. Although Professor Scheffler agrees with this assessment, he also believes that consequentialism seems initially plausible, and that there is a persistent air of paradox surrounding typical deontological views. In this book, therefore, he undertakes to reconsider the rejection of consequentialism. He argues that it is possible to provide a rationale for the view that agents need not always produce the best possible overall outcomes, and this motivates one departure from consequentialism; but he shows that it is surprisingly difficult to provide a satisfactory rationale for the view that there are times when agents must not produce the best possible overall outcomes. He goes on to argue for a hitherto neglected type of moral conception, according to which agents are always permitted, but not always required, to produce the best outcomes. Description : Play Money explores the remarkable new phenomenon of MMORPGs, or Massively MultiPlayer Online Role-Playing Games, in which hundreds of thousands of players operate fantasy characters in virtual environments. With city-sized populations, these games generate their own cultures, governments, and social systems and, inevitably, their own economies, which spill over into the real world. The desire for virtual goods-magic swords, enchanted breastplates, and special, hard-to-get elixirs-has spawned a cottage industry of "virtual loot farmers”: people who play the games just to obtain fantasy goods that they can sell in the real world. The best loot farmers can make between six figures a year and six figures a month. Play Money is an extended walk on the weird side: a vivid snapshot of a subculture whose denizens were once the stuff of mere sociological spectacle but now-with computer gaming poised to eclipse all otherentertainments in dollar volume, and with the lines between play and work, virtual and real increasingly blurred-look more and more like the future. Description : Kathryn Sutherland presents an edition of the fiction manuscripts of Jane Austen (1775-1817). Scholars have pored over this much-loved novelist for decades, yet there are still more riches to be uncovered by the careful presentation of the texts in this fully annotated new edition. Jane Austen's fiction manuscripts are the first substantial collection of autograph writings to survive for a British novelist. They represent every stage of her writing life, from childhood--aged 11 or 12--to the year of her death. The manuscripts represent a wide variety of physical states: working drafts, fair copies, and handwritten publications for private circulation. Where the juvenile, handwritten notebooks have long appeared to scholars to be finished artefacts, most of the other manuscript writings consist of pre-print or working drafts in various stages of development. There is no evidence to indicate that Austen saw the bulk of these working drafts as anything other than provisional. Hence the stark situation that no manuscripts remain for works which saw publication in her lifetime, the assumption being that these were routinely destroyed once replaced by print forms. There is only one exception: the two cancelled chapters of Persuasion, which represent an alternative ending to the one that made it into print. The manuscript evidence therefore represents a different Jane Austen: different in the range of fiction they contain from the novels we know only from print; and different in what they reveal about the workings of her imagination. Because of the variety of their pre-print states, because of their experimental range, and because of the way they extend the time span of her writing life (far longer than the single decade of the printed novels), these manuscript writings can claim a special place in our understanding of the evolution of the famous fictions. The edition presents full transcriptions of the texts based on a fresh examination of all the extant witnesses in Austen's hand, with facing facsimile images of the manuscript pages, and commentary on revisions, over-writings, erasures, and other features of the manuscripts. Volume II contains the facsimile and facing-page transcription of Volume the Second. Your heart will constrict as the man in front of you takes the bullet meant for you. You'll know the painful bite of shrapnel, the gnawing ache hunger brings and red-hot anger as a comrade falls.
